Oldtimer one-off parts.
Problem
The original Ferrari 225 rear axle broke just weeks before entering the Mille Miglia. Original or off-the-shelf parts are not available.
Solution
Develop and manufacture a new solution for this rear axle within the required time frame.
Description
Each project always starts with mapping all customer requirements. For this project we have worked with the following structure:
1. Mapping customer requirements
2. Obtaining original (broken) parts
3. Measure and compare to existing, off-the-shelf parts
4. Map possible solutions within time-frame
5. Choose desired path with customer
6. Create design in 3D
7. Production
8. Testing and validation
The spider gears within the original 1952 Ferrari differential had broken just before the car had to be transported to Italy to compete in the Mille Miglia. The original housing had severe damage as well. Original parts or an off-the-shelf solution are not available.
After obtaining all the parts and measuring them, we found a Drexler LSD in stock with similar installation dimensions to the stock differential. However, the spline in the side gears did not match the original. New driveshafts had to be made replicating the original Ferrari items, but with a different spline on the differential side.
As a bonus, the new driveshaft are made from much stronger material than the original items. All other parts were reconditioned and new bearings and shims supplied. Combined with the new Drexler centre section, this Ferrari should have no issues competing in the Mille Miglia or any future events! This project was a great example of KMP’s ability to design and manufacture even one-offs or small batches in a very short period of time.
